Samsung takes a swipe at pretentious iPhone owners in its new viral ad

New ad for Samsung Galaxy S II shows urban scene kids with delusions of creative greatness (who are actually baristas, apparently) queuing for the latest iPhone. It goes on to show people outside the queue who already have a great phone with 4G and a big, bright screen.

It's a great ad, even though I’ve been pretty loyal to iPhones, it digs right to the centre of what I think about a lot, which is, if I actually did a little research…

An Exhibition for Hipstamatics

'Hipstamatics' is the first European showcase of snapshots taken using the popular iPhone app that allows mobile phones to mimic antique analog cameras (it was actually awarded ‘App of the year’ by Apple in 2010).

When: 14 January– 31 January 2011. Mon.-Fri., 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Where: Orange Dot Gallery, 54 Tavistock Pl., WC1H 9RG.

Hipstamatic Facts:
- The original Hipstamatic analog camera was launched In 1982 by brothers Bruce and Winston Dorbowski.
- By the end of 1984 the group had manufactured and sold 157 units.
- The two brothers were tragically killed in a road accident that very same year, meaning that Hipstamatic never became mass produced.
- Now the Hipstamatic iPhone App has sought to recreate the magic of the original Hipstamatic analog cameras. It's got high-res output and gives anyone the ability to hand pick which film, flash and lense is best for a shot. I for one am a fan.

Pantone iPhone/iPad Cases

This would indeed be the best case scenario: You take your favourite gadget and dress it up in with your favourite colour. Monaco-based Case Scenario has linked up with Pantone and as a result, they are now able to make this scenario a reality.

In their Case Scenario Pantone Universe collection for Fall and Winter 2010-2011, this means specifically that you can dress your iPhone 4 and iPad in a protective case in a limited range of PANTONE® colours.

For iPhone 4, there are nine colours ranging from the deep Pantone Blue 7462 to the juicy Pantone Pink 226. For iPad, the Fall fashion colours are Pantone Black, Pantone Cool Grey, Pantone Blue 7462 and Pantone Red 711.

Don Draper checks his iPhone 4

In suit and tie with hair slicked back, Don Draper looks a testament to 1960s style…except for that iPhone 4 he’s toting.

Nope, you didn’t read that wrong. The iPhone might have only been available a good 40 years after Draper’s time, but in a wonderfully-shot behind-the-scenes look at the acclaimed serial, Rolling Stone captured a few jarring moments.

In another shot, Kenny Cosgrove and Harry Crane, both in full costume, can be seen peering into the screen of a MacBook Pro, the glow from the laptop cast across their Wayfarers.

The drama serial is especially lauded for its attention to detail—set designs are immaculately put together to reflect its mid-century time-frame accurately. So it’s a little bit jarring to see these characters whipping out devices from the far-flung—to them, at least—future.

Another reason to upgrade to the iPhone 4 !

San-Francisco-based photographer Joey Celis decided to merge two iconic devices together and created a Leica M9 skin for the iPhone. How cool is that?!

Carry your iPhone around in a Moleskine notebook with these Little Black Book iPhone + iPod Touch cases. I love the romantic, old-fashioned feel of them.

iOS 4.0.1 update now available

Somewhat earlier than expected, Apple has rolled out the much talked about new firmware for its iPhone 4, which according to the company will fix the handset's ongoing reception problems.

In actual fact, the update merely recalibrates the way the phone displays its signal bars, and makes the bars a bit taller so they're easier to see. Whereas previous versions showed a full five bars, despite only a mediocre signal, the new version now more accurately portrays the accepted maximum (that you'd get if you stood next to a tower) and the minimum signal level before a call is dropped, and has a more linear drop off in bars as it loses signal.

The new update is available immediately through iTunes and is compatible with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4. As per usual, you'll have to wait a while as you need to download the full 180MB firmware, despite only being a tiny update.

iPhone 4.0: Full facts

Well here's what it looks like, though this isn't an official press photo. It's a commissioned artwork entitled 'A saviour is born'. Rather eerie.

THE FACTS:
• It's called iPhone 4, not iPhone HD.

• It's slimmer; 24% thinner than the 3GS at 9.3mm.

• Improved display. Though the screen is slightly smaller, quality is four times better. Analyst Michael Gartenberg explains: "At 326 pixels per inch, Apple has now hit the magic threshold above 300 where the retina simply can't see the individual pixels anymore. This is now the new benchmark for all devices to follow."

• Faster A4 processor.

• Improved battery life. Goddam they needed to improve that.

• A gyroscope has been added to the accelerometer in the phone, which will be great for games developers.

• Improved camera with 5 megapixel camera, LED flash and 5x zoom. Video has been updated and an official iMovie app allows editing, transitions and themes. Plus a front-facing camera is designed for video chat.

• iBooks now runs on iPhone.

• The iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad operating system is now called iOS and is approaching 100m downloads.

Watch the full presentation if you missed it.

THE VERDICT
Gartenberg could hardly contain himself: "Apple has raised the bar for the phone market once again. With a combination of new hardware and software features, iPhone sets the standard for what the state of the art smartphone experience is."

John Paczkowski on AllThingsD pointed out iPhone 4 could be a problem for Flip: "it was hard to watch Apple's demo of the device's HD video camera working in concert with iMovie Monday and not think that it's going to eat the Flip Video camcorder and Kodak's Zi8 alive as soon as it arrives at market. And things don't look much better for Google's Android 'superphones', though obviously, there's a much bigger battle to be fought there. Certainly, the company and its hardware partners have some serious work to do in the months ahead."

Fast Company said it feels like a winner, "It's eye-catchingly thin, stylish and modern, and hardware upgrades like the screen and processor give the makeover some heft. You'll want one. Everyone will want one."

Wired said it will have you drooling, but then published a comparison of iPhone 4 and the HTC Evo 4G, which has a better camera and a larger screen.

For ZDNet, the sleek design of iPhone 4 still isn't enough to better the Evo, which also has unlimited multitasking, support for Google Voice, and free navigation. And JC News Network reminds us that this isn't a 4G phone: "This new iPhone 4 doesn't mean it is a 4G phone. The only 4G phone as of the moment is the HTC EVO 4G. It is being powered by Sprint mobile that uses WiMax, the only network provider that offers 4G."

It's hard to believe these illustrations were created on an iPhone...

...but this guy manages to create one a day and uploads them to his blog daily. The wonderful images are created using the Sketchbook Mobile or Brushes Apps, and the artist, Kristofer Strom, says "I started drawing these on the bus to and from my studio and thought, 'hey, why not try doing at least one illustration each day?'," he says. "It's very relaxing. Put on some good music and just start drawing."
